Within it, there are <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>mastoid air cells<\/strong><\/span> that are connected with the middle ear. They can contribute to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">inflammatory processes<\/span> of the middle ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">During inspection, you should assess the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">colour<\/span> of the covering skin. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Redness<\/span> may indicate <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">inflammation<\/span> of the skin itself or of the mastoid process beneath the skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Palpate the mastoid process. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Note the presence of any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">swelling<\/span>, and if present, assess whether this is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">free<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">attached<\/span> to the underlying tissue. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Temperature<\/span> is also a focal point, as is tenderness upon palpation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mastoid process is slightly elevated behind the auricle.
