fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The patient sits on a chair with good back support<em><strong> [Figure 3]<\/strong><\/em>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Sit down beside the patient on a height-adjustable stool. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Your eyes should be located at the level of the ear that is to be examined.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 3<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Aim the examination lamp at the ear that is to be examined. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>auricle<\/strong><\/span> is usually covered by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">smooth skin<\/span> without any redness or swelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If this is not the case, palpate the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">red area<\/span> with the dorsal side of your finger to determine if this area is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">warmer<\/span> than the surrounding skin. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Any swelling present should be palpated between thumb and index finger to determine the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">consistency<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">borders<\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Pay attention to the patient\u2019s face or enquire whether the pressure you are applying is painful. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If you see any ear piercings in the lobule or the helix, palpate these as well and pay attention to the surrounding areas of these perforations in case they are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">solid<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">warm<\/span>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">painful<\/span> <em><strong>[Figure 4]<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 4<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Subsequently, inspect the opening of the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>external auditory meatus<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Normally, this is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">clean<\/span> or has a small quantity of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">yellow-brown cerumen<\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Discharge of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pus<\/span> out of the ear always indicates <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">inflammation<\/span> of the more internally located structures of the ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Briefly press the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>tragus<\/strong><\/span> and ask the patient whether this is painful or exacerbates any existing pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Take the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>upper ridge<\/strong><\/span> of the auricle between thumb and index finger and pull this posterosuperiorly, towards the crown of the patient\u2019s head <em><strong>[Figure 5]<\/strong><\/em>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">By doing this, the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>frontal part<\/strong><\/span> of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">auditory meatus<\/span> becomes accessible for inspection. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The auditory meatus is covered in skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; display: block;\">Figure 5<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A few <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hairs<\/span> are detectable here and\/or some <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">yellow-brown cerumen<\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Normally, the skin is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pink<\/span> in colour. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Redness<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">swelling<\/span> or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">coating layer<\/span> other than cerumen are considered abnormal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In children, it is often necessary to pull the auricle <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anteroinferiorly<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">This is due to the difference in anatomy of the auditory meatus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Procedure The patient sits on a chair with good back support [Figure 3].
