{"id":1484,"date":"2010-12-06T09:41:27","date_gmt":"2010-12-06T09:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/affect\/"},"modified":"2023-11-01T16:04:31","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T16:04:31","slug":"affect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/the-psychiatric-interview\/characteristics-of-the-mental-status-examination\/affect\/","title":{"rendered":"Affect"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>affect<\/strong><\/span> is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">visible<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">audible expression<\/span> of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>emotional reactions<\/strong><\/span> to both <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">external events<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">internal experiences<\/span> (<em>thoughts, memories<\/em>). Affect, is to be seen as superimposed on mood. The various affective modalities are to be distinguished from mood by being in the foreground and short in duration. They are the responses to external and internal stimuli, and observable as such. As a rule, any dysfunction in the expression of these emotional reactions may be observed by watching the patient\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">facial expression<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">autonomic responses<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">psychomotor functions<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">voice<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">choice of words<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Modulations in the affect are known as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Normal Modulation<\/strong><\/span>.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Blunted Affect:<\/em><\/strong><\/span> There is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">very little<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no response<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>internal<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>external stimuli<\/strong><\/span>. A blunted affect is indicative of a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depressive disorder<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety disorders<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">schizophrenia<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dementia<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">autism<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Labile Affect:<\/em><\/strong><\/span> There is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">very little<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no control<\/span> over responses to <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>internal<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>external stimuli<\/strong><\/span>. A labile affect is indicative of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mania<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Incongruent Affect:<\/em><\/strong><\/span> Physician experiences <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no relationship<\/span> between <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>expression<\/strong><\/span> of <strong><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\">emotions<\/span><\/strong> and the affective life of the patient.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Forced, Exaggerated Or Theatrical Affect:<\/em><\/strong><\/span> Affects can be exaggerated or even theatrical in nature whereby feelings are expressed in an increasingly exaggerated manner.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The affect is the visible and audible expression of emotional reactions to both external events and internal experiences (thoughts, memories).
