Upon this ground tone, our emotions are superimposed. Mood or the affective state may vary within certain boundaries but it is normally constant, within the time frame of several hours to several days. Only when this affective state falls outside these boundaries for longer periods of time, we refer to it as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mood<\/span> (<em>or affective<\/em>) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">disorder<\/span>. Mood dysfunctions may be observed during anamnesis, but are subjective, and should be checked with the patient. <\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The various mood components are described as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Euthymic <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(<em>normal mood<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Gloomy <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(<em>not cheerful<\/em>). A gloomy mood is a characteristic sign for a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depressive disorder<\/span>, or any psychiatric disorder in which depression is co-morbid disorder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Anhedonic <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(<em>the inability to gain pleasure<\/em>). Anhedonia is a characteristic sign of a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depressive disorder<\/span>, but also of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">schizophrenia<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Apathetic <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(<em>dull, numb<\/em>). An apathetic mood is characteristic of a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depressive disorder<\/span>, but may also be indicative of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dementia<\/span> and the negative symptoms of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">schizophrenia<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Anxious<\/strong><\/span>.<\/em>\u00a0An anxious mood is characteristic of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety disorders<\/span>, but also of various other psychiatric disorders, including <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depression<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Dysphoric <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(<em>annoyed, irritable<\/em>). A dysphoric mood is indicative of a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depressive disorder<\/span>, but also of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">schizophrenia<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mania<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>Euphoric <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(<em>too happy<\/em>), <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong><em>expansive<\/em><\/strong><\/span> (<em>over-estimating oneself, being overly communicative<\/em>) and <em><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ecstatic<\/strong><\/span><\/em> (<em>elated<\/em>). Mood aspects that are characteristic of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mania<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fronto-temporal brain<\/span> related disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Combinations of these mood aspects may occur. It is important at the time of anamnesis to gain insight into the mood fluctuations, both in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">amplitude<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">frequency<\/span>, and the patient\u2019s subjective experience and ideas regarding his moods.
