It is not only important to listen to \u201c<em>what<\/em>\u201d the patient says, but also observe \u201c<em>how<\/em>\u201d they describe and experience their symptoms. Based on this, it is possible to deduce if the complaint is presented <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reliably<\/span> or if there are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">inconsistencies<\/span>\u00a0between verbal and non-verbal information presented.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Consider a patient who steps confidently into the office, without a backward glance or a forward peek into the office. Their handshake feels dry, not clammy, and there is no tremor in the hand. However, they inform you that they are very anxious and convinced someone is watching them.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">You may detect <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>inconsistencies<\/strong><\/span> between what the patient has told you and what you conclude from their <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>non-verbal behaviour<\/strong><\/span>. It is important to consider the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feelings\/reactions<\/span> a patient induces in you, and why.
