Compression of the carotid artery in the case of bleeding from the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">face<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">skull<\/span> is not effective, because the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>left<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>right carotid arteries<\/strong><\/span> are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">connected<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>vertebral arteries<\/strong><\/span>, which run through the apertures in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">transverse processes<\/span> of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cervical vertebrae<\/span>, also supply the head with blood and are connected to the carotid artery. The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>connections<\/strong><\/span> between the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">carotid arteries<\/span> and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">vertebral arteries<\/span> form the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>circle of Willis<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Pressure Point:<\/strong><\/span> <\/em>The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>carotid artery<\/strong><\/span> runs between the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sterno-cleidomastoid muscle<\/span> and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">trachea<\/span>. <\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>transverse processes<\/strong> <\/span>of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cervical vertebrae<\/span> act as the solid base. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Due to the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>arterial vascular communications<\/strong><\/span> in the circle of Willis, arterial blood will escape from both the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">distal<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">proximal side<\/span> of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">damaged artery<\/span>. For this reason, pressure should be exerted on the carotid artery both <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">below<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">above the wound<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Place the thumb on the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>medial side<\/strong><\/span> of the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>sternocleidomastoid muscle<\/strong><\/span>, both <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">proximal<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">distal<\/span> to the wound.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Firmly press the artery at both sites, downwards, against the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cervical vertebrae transverse processes<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Avoid any pressure on the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>trachea<\/strong><\/span> <em><strong>[Figure 12]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Use your thumb to exert direct pressure <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">inside<\/span> the wound, if the bleeding cannot be controlled using <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>indirect compression<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1429\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Bandages_ba-fig-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Bandages_ba-fig-12.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Bandages_ba-fig-12-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 12<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Compression of the carotid artery can be associated with two complications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>vagal nerve<\/strong><\/span>, a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">parasympathetic nerve<\/span> which <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>regulates the heart rate<\/strong><\/span> amongst other things. It lies close to the carotid artery, and can be stimulated by the pressure, causing <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cardiac arrhythmia<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In addition, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>arterial congestion<\/strong><\/span> can stretch the carotid artery wall to such an extent that the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>baroreceptors<\/strong><\/span> are stimulated, resulting in a marked <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">drop in blood pressure<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">These complications are of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">secondary importance<\/span> if bleeding from the carotid artery cannot be stopped as the patient will bleed to death.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indication: Only for bleeding arising from an artery in the neck.
