{"id":1417,"date":"2010-12-05T12:11:38","date_gmt":"2010-12-05T12:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/manual-compression\/"},"modified":"2023-11-10T10:24:56","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T10:24:56","slug":"manual-compression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/bandages-and-bandaging-techniques\/controlling-bleeding-and-wound-care\/manual-compression\/","title":{"rendered":"Manual Compression"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Manual compression<\/strong><\/span> to close off blood vessels can be applied <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">directly<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">indirectly<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Direct manual compression<\/strong><\/span> involves using the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fingers<\/span> to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">compress the artery or vein<\/span> inside the wound.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Indirect manual compression<\/strong><\/span> involves interrupting the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">blood supply<\/span> to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">damaged artery or vein<\/span>. In the case of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>arterial bleeding<\/strong><\/span>, the artery should be compressed at a point between the wound and the heart, and for a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>venous bleed<\/strong><\/span>, pressure should be exerted on the vein distal to the wound.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Direct Manual Compression Technique<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If, in the case of arterial bleeding, indirect manual compression is not possible or is ineffective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">As an alternative to a compression bandage for venous bleeding, if the site or severity of the bleeding makes application of such a bandage impossible.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Apply sterile gauze to the wound. Only do this if the material is close at hand. Do not lose any time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Place a thumb or, with bigger wounds, a fist in the wound.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Push down firmly onto the wound. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In the case of severe venous bleeding, keep doing this for at least 10 minutes. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">After this time, check whether the bleeding has been controlled. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If necessary, repeat this procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In the case of arterial bleeding, keep exerting pressure until the patient&#8217;s treatment can be taken over in the clinic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manual compression to close off blood vessels can be applied directly or indirectly: Direct manual compression involves using the fingers to compress the artery or vein inside the wound.
