In general, they are never in immediate contact with the surface of the wound. Their ability to retain a high level of moisture means they are also used in certain situations to keep the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>skin moist<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Cotton Wool Wadding.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>De-waxed<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>purified<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>bleached cotton fibres<\/strong><\/span>, sometimes mixed with <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>viscose threads<\/strong><\/span>. The fibres are layered after carding (<em>teased out in one direction<\/em>), and their spiral shape allows them to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">latch together<\/span>. White cotton wool has a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>high absorption capacity<\/strong><\/span>, and the volume decreases when wet. White cotton wool tends to give off fluff and should therefore never be placed immediately on an open wound.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Cellulose Wadding.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">These are made of a number of layers of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>bleached cellulose membranes<\/strong><\/span>. Cellulose wadding has a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>high absorption capacity<\/strong><\/span>, but disintegrates once it reaches its saturation point. As it gives off fluff, cellulose wadding should never be placed directly onto a wound.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Cellulose Pads.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A number of layers of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cellulose<\/strong><\/span>, surrounded by a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>strong moisture-permeable layer<\/strong><\/span>.
