Hydrophilic gauze is folded into a number of non-fraying layers, usually 12. The absorption capacity depends on the number of layers of gauze and the number of threads per cm2: 17-thread means 17 threads per cm2. A disadvantage of gauze is that it can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">adhere to the wound<\/span>. Hydrophilic gauze is available in many sizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Non-Woven Pad.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Highly absorbent pad<\/strong><\/span>, manufactured from <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>de-waxed cotton fibres<\/strong><\/span>. Due to the non-woven technique, this pad forms a closed and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>compact membrane<\/strong><\/span>, unlike hydrophilic gauze. The higher number of cotton fibres increases the absorption capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Impregnated Pad.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">These pads have been coated with an <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ointment<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cream<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>drug<\/strong><\/span> in dry form.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Non-Adherent Pad.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">This pad has been manufactured from material which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">does not adhere<\/span> to the wound, such as <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>viscose-acrylic<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>silicones<\/strong><\/span>. This means that the formation of granulation tissue is not disturbed each time the dressing is changed. The material does not absorb moisture. The only function of the non-adherent pad is to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">protect the wound from contamination<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Spray-On Plaster.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>thin<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>transparent layer<\/strong><\/span> which is sprayed over the wound. The film layer is <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>elastic<\/strong><\/span>, provides some <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ventilation<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>protects the wound<\/strong><\/span> from contamination. The wound must be well cleaned and disinfected before application, as the layer of film can cause a warm and damp environment in which micro-organisms may rapidly multiple. The spray should not be used on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">infected wounds, mucous membranes or burns<\/span>. Another contraindication is wet wounds, as the layer of film impairs the removal and evaporation of wound fluid.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Butterfly Plasters.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Linen<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>synthetic plaster<\/strong><\/span> with a non-adherent central section. This plaster is used to close a small wound by bringing together the gaping edges of the wound <em><strong>[Figure 4]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><em>Lint.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Closely woven piece of cotton<\/strong><\/span>, with one roughened side to which ointment can be applied.
