{"id":1407,"date":"2010-12-05T11:46:31","date_gmt":"2010-12-05T11:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wound-dressing-materials\/"},"modified":"2023-11-13T10:34:08","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T10:34:08","slug":"wound-dressing-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/bandages-and-bandaging-techniques\/bandaging-materials-and-equipment\/wound-dressing-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Wound Dressing Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Dressings In Immediate Contact With Wounds<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Hydrophilic Gauze Pad<\/em>.<\/strong> Loosely woven tissue made of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>de-waxed cotton<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>highly absorbent<\/strong><\/span>, but which becomes <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>permeable<\/strong><\/span> upon saturation. Hydrophilic gauze is folded into a number of non-fraying layers, usually 12. The absorption capacity depends on the number of layers of gauze and the number of threads per cm2: 17-thread means 17 threads per cm2. A disadvantage of gauze is that it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">can adhere<\/span> to the wound. Hydrophilic gauze is available in many sizes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Non-woven Pad.<\/em><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Highly absorbent<\/strong><\/span> pad, manufactured from <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>de-waxed cotton fibres<\/strong><\/span>. Due to the non-woven technique, this pad forms a closed and compact membrane, unlike hydrophilic gauze. The higher number of cotton fibres increases the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">absorption capacity<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Impregnated Pad.<\/em> <\/strong>These pads have been coated with an <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ointment<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cream<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>drug<\/strong><\/span> in dry form.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Non-adherent Pad.<\/em> <\/strong>This pad has been manufactured from material which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">does not adhere<\/span> to the wound, such as <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>viscose-acrylic<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>silicones<\/strong><\/span>. This means that the formation of granulation tissue is not disturbed each time the dressing is changed. The material <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">does not absorb moisture<\/span>. The only function of the non-adherent pad is to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">protect the wound<\/span> from contamination.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Spray-on Plaster.<\/em><\/strong> A <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>thin<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>transparent layer<\/strong><\/span> which is sprayed over the wound. The film layer is <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>elastic<\/strong><\/span>, provides some <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>ventilation<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>protects<\/strong><\/span> the wound from contamination. The wound must be well cleaned and disinfected before application, as the layer of film can cause a warm and damp environment in which micro-organisms may rapidly multiple. The spray should not be used on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">infected wounds<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mucous membranes<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">burns<\/span>. Another contraindication is wet wounds, as the layer of film impairs the removal and evaporation of wound fluid.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Butterfly Plasters.<\/em><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Linen<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>synthetic plaster<\/strong><\/span> with a non-adherent central section. This plaster is used to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">close a small wound<\/span> by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bring together<\/span> gaping edges of the wound<em><strong> [Figure 4]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Lint.<\/em><\/strong> Closely woven piece of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cotton<\/strong><\/span>, with one roughened side to which ointment can be applied. This is used primarily for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dermatological applications<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1406\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Bandages_ba-fig-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Bandages_ba-fig-4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Bandages_ba-fig-4-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 4<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Absorbent Dressing Material<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">These bandaging materials are used to <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>absorb wound fluid<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>blood<\/strong><\/span>. In general, they are never in immediate contact with the surface of the wound. Their ability to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">retain a high level of moisture<\/span> means they are also used in certain situations to keep the skin moist.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Cotton Wool Wadding.<\/em><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>De-waxed<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>purified<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>bleached cotton fibres<\/strong><\/span>, sometimes mixed with <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>viscose threads<\/strong><\/span>. The fibres are layered after carding, and their spiral shape allows them to latch together. White cotton wool has a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">high absorption capacity<\/span>, and the volume decreases when wet. White cotton wool tends to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">give off fluff<\/span> and should therefore, never be placed immediately on an open wound.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Cellulose Wadding.<\/em><\/strong> These are made of a number of layers of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>bleached cellulose membranes<\/strong><\/span>. Cellulose wadding has a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">high absorption capacity<\/span>, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">disintegrates<\/span> once it reaches its saturation point. As it gives off fluff, cellulose wadding should never be placed directly onto a wound.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Cellulose Pads.<\/em><\/strong> A number of layers of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cellulose<\/strong><\/span>, surrounded by a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>strong moisture-permeable layer<\/strong><\/span>. This outer layer prevents the cellulose <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fluffing<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">disintegrating<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Combined Dressing Material<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Bandaging products are available to dress a wound in which the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>dressing layer<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>absorbent layer<\/strong><\/span>, and the <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>fixing layer<\/strong><\/span>, are combined in one bandage. The layer that is in contact with the wound is usually made of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>non-absorbent<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>non-adherent material<\/strong><\/span>, which allows moisture through to the absorbent core of the bandage. The outer layer is usually <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>moisture-repellent<\/strong><\/span> to prevent wound fluid leaking out.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Wound Dressing Pad.<\/em> <\/strong>A sterile dressing, consisting of an <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>absorbent cellulose core<\/strong><\/span>, a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>moisture-repellent outer layer<\/strong><\/span> and a <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>wound dressing layer<\/strong><\/span>. The layer in contact with the wound consists of a membrane made of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cellulose<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cotton<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>synthetic fibres<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Dressing pads are available in many different sizes and there are different ways to fix them. Some pads need to be fixed with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">separate adhesive plaster<\/span>, a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bandage<\/span> or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">net bandage<\/span>. Other products come with an adhesive plaster layer. This layer consists of a carrier made of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>linen<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>viscose<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>synthetic fibres<\/strong><\/span>, onto which an adhesive has been applied. The adhesive is made up of a mixture of <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>zinc oxide<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>rubber<\/strong><\/span>, or the more skin-friendly <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>polyacrylate<\/strong><\/span>. There are also differences in terms of water-repellent, air permeable and stretch properties. Examples of a dressing pad include <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">elastoplasts<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">eye pads<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><em>Emergency Bandage.<\/em><\/strong> Sterile pad made of compressed <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>white cotton wool<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>cellulose<\/strong><\/span>, wrapped in <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>hydrophilic gauze<\/strong><\/span>. A strip of hydrophilic gauze is attached to the two sides of the pad. This bandage is used primarily in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emergency situations<\/span>. The emergency bandage is folded and packed in such a way that it can be rapidly and hygienically applied to the wound at the site of the accident.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The emergency bandage is available in <strong>four standard sizes<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">No. 1 (<em>12 x 12 cm<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">No. 2 (<em>18 x 18 cm<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">No. 3 (<em>18 x 28 cm<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">No. 4 (<em>28 x 28 cm<\/em>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dressings In Immediate Contact With Wounds Hydrophilic Gauze Pad.
