The spinal root is L5-S2.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/116864074?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grasp the ankle and use one hand to fix the foot on the examination table.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Using the blunt end of a cotton swab, or handle of the reflex hammer, stroke the lateral side of the sole and then the ball of the foot, first gently and then more firmly if necessarily [Figure 92].<\/li>\n<li>Note the reaction in the big toe. Plantar flexion is normal. Extension, possibly combined with flexion of the entire leg is pathological and indicates a lesion in the pyramidal tract&nbsp;(= Babinski\u2019s reflex). If there is no reaction, other factors may be responsible such as cold feet. Repeat the test after warming the feet or a day later. If there is no visible reaction in the big toe, paralysis of the extensor hallucis longus muscle may be the cause. In this case, a lesion in the pyramidal tract can be demonstrated by means of the following two reflexes: Bechterew-Mendel relex (deep tendon) and Rossolimo&#8217;s reflex (deep tendeon).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"display: inline-block;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-136\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/NeuroExam_n-fig-92.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/NeuroExam_n-fig-92.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/NeuroExam_n-fig-92-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"width: 400px; display: block;\">Figure 92<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bechterew-Mendel reflex<\/strong> (deep tendon)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using the reflex hammer, strike just proximally to the base of the toes on the lateral dorsum of the foot [Figure 93].
