The latter method uses less suture material than the first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Hand-tied knots<\/strong><\/span> are used primarily when separate needle and thread are used and when there is tension in the wound. <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Instrumental knots<\/strong><\/span> are particularly suitable for use with a single strand of atraumatic suture material, with which multiple stitches can be made. A loop can be tied with the help of a needle holder at the start and end of an intracutaneous suture or a running suture.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Both types of knotting techniques rely on the same basic principles:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A knot consists of multiple passes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Each subsequent pass is made in the opposite direction of the previous pass to prevent the knot from slipping.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">When tightening a knot, the ends of the thread must remain crossed until the knot is moved to its correct position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">When tightening a knot, the ends of the thread must be parallel <em><strong>[Figure 37]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Knots should be positioned above points of entry, rather than the wound itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The edges of the wound must be approximated correctly when tightening a knot. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If the knot is too tight, it can disrupt circulation and consequently lead to poor wound healing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"jce_caption\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; display: inline-block; color: #003366;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1364\" style=\"margin: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MinorSurgery_ms-fig-37.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MinorSurgery_ms-fig-37.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MinorSurgery_ms-fig-37-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong><span style=\"width: 300px; display: block;\">Figure 37<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We differentiate between knots tied by hand and those tied making use of the needle holder (instrumental knots).
