The only physical-diagnostic finding for some knee abnormalities may be <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>palpable crepitations<\/strong><\/span> (<em>retropatellar chondropathy<\/em>). <\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Therefore, <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>endorotation<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>exorotation<\/strong><\/span> are only tested in the passive examination (<em>meniscus injuries<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/124602278?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Procedure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The patient lies completely flat with extended hips and knees (<em>if possible<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Test:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">For flexion <em><strong>[Figure 59]<\/strong> <\/em>and extension<em><strong> [Figure 60]<\/strong><\/em>, <\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\">palpate the knee with one hand, during which the thumb palpates one side of the joint space and the index or middle finger palpates on the other side of the joint space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">To locate the joint space, the knee can best be briefly brought into <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>90\u00b0 flexion<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">During this palpation, the palm of the hand should rest gently on the patella. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">The common hand should be placed around the ankle or the calcaneus of the leg concerned.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If <span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>abnormal lateralisatio<\/strong><strong>n<\/strong><\/span> was observed during the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">active movement examination<\/span>, it might be worthwhile to perform this palpation again, while loosely palpating the patella between the thumb and index finger. This way, you might be able to objectify the \u2018<em>poor tracking<\/em>\u2019 of the patella.
