{"id":113,"date":"2010-06-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-09T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloverock.info\/mockosce23\/new\/the-cranial-nerves-cn-xii\/"},"modified":"2023-01-11T23:52:50","modified_gmt":"2023-01-11T23:52:50","slug":"the-cranial-nerves-cn-xii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qpercom.com\/sim\/index.php\/the-neurological-examination\/the-cranial-nerves\/the-cranial-nerves-cn-xii\/","title":{"rendered":"The cranial nerves &#8211; CN XII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CN XII only contains motor fibres and innervates the muscles in the tongue.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/116864305?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Procedure<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask the patient to open their mouth.<\/li>\n<li>Assess the shape and position of the tongue.<\/li>\n<li>Note whether the tongue lies still.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the patient to stick their tongue out.<\/li>\n<li>Observe whether they stick their tongue out to the left or right.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the patient to push their tongue firmly into their cheek.<\/li>\n<li>Exert counter-pressure to the outside of the cheek and assess the strength of the tongue.<\/li>\n<li>Compare left and right.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Interpretation<\/h3>\n<p>If the tongue does not lie still in the mouth but displays marked fasciculations consider the possibility of an anterior horn condition [Figure 34].<br \/>\n<em>NB.
